New Year’s Eve

New year's eve

The old year is through, it is no more to be.
Like a jilted mistress she steps out onto the street.
Looking for somewhere to stay for the night.
Eating breadcrumbs from the pavement that her master left by slight.

Dressed in ragged clothes, face hollow as the night.
Cheeks as empty craters, she gives up the fight.
Peaks through the window, to catch her old love’s sight.
She stretches out her feet with all her might.

The new year is preparing to take her rival’s place.
Stepping in her wedding dress with ease and grace.
Neck full of diamonds sparkling bright.
Auburn hair flowing down over shoulders white as ice.

She slides down the aisle, meeting her lover’s teary face.
Body like a goddess, wrapped in silk and lace.
She looks up slowly to meet his gaze.
Smiling coyly from underneath her veils.

New Year’s Eve – Closing thoughts

This poem was published today in Prosaethics magazine “A new chapter awaits” issue. I wanted to write a poem on the theme of new beginnings for that issue and started thinking about the old year as a scorned lover, with the new year stepping in dressed in white. That conveyed an effeective metaphor to me.

I wish all of my followers a good start of the new year! Thank you for reading, liking and commenting on my writing in the past year it means a lot to me. In 2024, I want to continue to work on my website with my newsletter, some e-guides on writing poetry and maybe even publish my own poetry collection, so stay posted!
