The night’s embrace is settling down,
drawing her misty veil across the sky,
with stars hiding in its crescent.
The evening’s heavy with nature’s scent,
weat leaves, jasmine and myrthe.
Crickets are playing down by the pond,
staying close together to lament.
The moon is rising like a blushing bride,
all dressed in silk, beaming with pride.
Shy to meet her lover’s eyes.
For a while more, the dark will prevail.
Until the first light of the sun chases it away.
Like the king’s knight, racing forward on his horse.
Dagger drawn and eyes closed.
Trying to evade his fate.
Thought he knows, all too well, what will happen next.
So stay close, my darling, I will not leave your side.
Watch the moon travel over the sky.
Together we will make it through the night.
Background to this poem
I wrote “Night’s embrace” after finding inspiration from an image of the sun and the moon. I began thinking about the transitions that occur in life, such as the shift from night to day, the changing of seasons, and various other milestones. To convey this idea, I used the metaphor of a blushing bride to represent the rising moon, and a knight fighting for his life to symbolize the darkness being chased away by the sun. The overriding theme of the poem is transitions and overcoming change. Have you written something on a similar topic that you would like to share? Feel free to comment on this post.
