Raise Your Voice

Read my poem “Raise Your Voice” and experience the dynamics of spoken word poetry.

Me raising my voice

Step out of the shadows,
the world needs your voice.
Speak up and cut through all the noise.
Carve out your space, I want to hear
the whispers you left hanging in my ear.
The stage is ready, the microphone's raised.
The lamp is shining in your face.
Step out into the spotlight, take a deep breath.
Your audience is waiting. What have you got to say?

Spoken word poetry is a captivating art form. It brings together the power of word and voice. It’s dynamic and emotive. Poets share their work with a live audience. Often, they’re accompanied by music or other artistic expressions.

What sets spoken word poetry apart is its raw and unfiltered nature. Artists convey their message with fervor and authenticity. Through rhythm, tone, and body language, poets create an immersive experience. They draw listeners into the emotional core of the piece.

This art form tackles diverse themes. These include social justice, personal struggles, love, and cultural identity. It serves as a platform for marginalized voices. It sparks conversations and fosters empathy. This is through the impactful delivery of personal narratives and societal commentary.

Spoken word poetry has gained significant popularity. It finds stages in open mic nights, poetry slams, and online platforms. Its ability to blend poetry with performance creates a profound and memorable experience for both artists and audiences.

Impact on communities

Spoken word have a profound impact on individuals and communities. Through compelling performances, it gives a voice to marginalized groups, shedding light on their experiences and fostering empathy and understanding. For example, in the poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou, the empowering words resonate with many individuals, particularly those who have faced adversity. In communities, spoken word events have provided a platform for storytelling and the expression of shared experiences, fostering a sense of unity and belonging. Overall, spoken word has the power to uplift, educate, and unite both individuals and communities.

The photo above is from the second poetry reading I ever did with Stockholm Poet Society. The photographer captured the moment really well. I read my poems “Where the River Flows Into the Sea” and “Beneath the Cherry Blossom Trees”.

I wrote the poem above a while ago on the importance of telling the world who you are and sharing your unique talents. Personally I have found that voice and that strenght through poetry.
