On International Women’s Day, I wanted to write about how poetry empowers women. Poetry is a powerful way for women to express and embrace their strength, resilience, and essence. Through poetry, women have found a platform to share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs, inspiring and empowering others. From Maya Angelou to Rupi Kaur, poetry plays a vital role in empowering women globally.

The beauty of poetry lies in its ability to capture deep emotions and experiences in a few carefully chosen words. Through poetry, women have challenged stereotypes, confronted societal norms, and shared stories that resonate with women from all walks of life. By expressing personal struggles and victories in poetry, women find catharsis and create connections with readers, offering comfort and encouragement.

A Celebration of Women

Poetry has the power to celebrate womanhood in all its aspects – vulnerability, strength, compassion, and ambition. It serves as a representation, enabling women to see themselves in the verses of poets who have paved the way for a more diverse literary landscape. Moreover, poetry can raise awareness and advocate for gender equality, shedding light on global women’s issues.

In essence, poetry stands as a testament to the strong spirit of women. It amplifies their voices, celebrates their existence, and instills a sense of solidarity and empowerment. Through the rhythmic cadence of poetry, women find strength, unity, and inspiration, shaping a world where their stories unfold with unwavering power and grace.

My International Women’s Day Poems

Walking Through Fire

I walked through fire, got purged and clean,
found my way out without being seen.
I traveled to the dark lands and back
no longer stuck at the end of the track.

Like a pheonix I rose at the crack of dawn,
my sparkling wings no longer withdrawn.
I wish you could see what I’ve become
no longer scared, but a woman of my own.

Then maybe you’d lift your eyes
and see me with a knowing smile

Double Standards

Why is it that I’m judged so differently than you?
I do the things daily that you get praised to do.
I clean, pick up the kids clothes, and no one says a word.
And yet, when you do it, it’s a chorus of awws.

If I work, I am a bad mom, if I’m home, my ambitions through.
If I go out I should be home way earlier than you.
I wish one day they’d see me the same way they see you.
A complex individual with more layers than two.

In “Walking Through Fire” I wanted to show how people can become stronger and more resilient, especially women overcoming tough times. “Double Standards” comments on the unfair treatment and conflicting expectations that women face in society.

Closing Thoughts

Through the powerful art of poetry, we honor the strong and resilient women, weaving their diverse stories into a captivating tapestry of empowerment. Embracing the transformative power of poetic expression, we strive for a world where women’s stories resonate with unwavering strength, sparking a timeless symphony of empowerment and unity. So celebrate International Women’s Day by getting empowered through poetry!
